THE BASICS!

FULL NAME: Micah Joseph Rose
NICKNAMES: Mike (It was bound to happen)
AGE & DOB: 27-30 | December 3
PLACE OF BIRTH: Greenwich, Connecticut

MARITAL STATUS: Single
SEXUALITY: Homosexual
OCCUPATION: PDF in Theoretical Mathematics
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Ithaca, NY

APPEARANCE!
And slips behind the walls

Micah is quite possibly the world's most unlikely looking mathematician. He stands a little over six feet tall, with black hair and green eyes, and has the build of the football player his father once wished he was - though in his case, it's because he detoxes from his research by hitting the gym. Micah has a heavy beard, and his five o'clock shadow tends to be in place by 2:30 in the afternoon. His skin has an olive cast to it, and he tans extremely easily - at least when he gets outside.

Style-wise, Micah tends to take advantage of the fact that as a researcher, he doesn't have to dress up most of the time. He works in jeans and t-shirts for the most part, adding layers when Ithaca's winters hit hard. He does have a leather jacket in his one attempt to look a little cool, and he tends to wear it when he's teaching classes - it throws the baby mathematicians off. He's nearsighted and has both glasses and contacts - but he tends to wear his black-framed glasses more often. It's easier, and serves as good camouflage on those days when he feels like he needs to look more mathematician.

PERSONALITY!
In the tray of colors a whirlwind appeared

Micah, on the surface, seems highly confident and the type of guy who can talk to anyone. But underneath that, he's got his own insecurities. Nothing major, but he's a math nerd who grew up in a family of confident athletes, and he always felt a little like he didn't fit in. Sometimes he still feels the same, even in the enclave of math geekery that is the Cornell University mathematics department; he sometimes feels like he has one foot in academia and the other foot in the world of sports bars and football games that his dad and brother occupy.

Still, he fits better in academia than the latter. If someone got him started, Micah could talk chaos theory for days. His classes at Cornell are some of the most popular ones in the graduate department - and part of that might be a touch of Indiana Jones syndrome (though he's kind of disappointed that no one's ever written him love notes on their eyelids) but it's more because he's so passionate about the subject of complex structures and fractals.

The same passion about his subject has always made dating kind of difficult. The pool of gay men working in STEM isn't infinite anyway, and Micah's very narrow and complicated area of study - and the way he sometimes can't shut up about it - limits the field further. He's had a few boyfriends over the years, but never anything really serious. He does, however, have a fair number of friends, and he's a very affectionate sort of guy. He's a pretty physical friend, and given to hugs more than standoffishness.

Micah has a quirky sense of humor, too, and always seems to be finding something funny - even if no one else in the room can see it.

BIOGRAPHY!
Underneath the painting where it once was clear

Micah was born the third child in as many years to Seth and Naomi Rose of Greenwich, Connecticut. Seth, a former second string wide receiver at UConn, had a successful career as a chemical engineering consultant, and Naomi was a physical therapist who'd played volleyball all the way through school herself. The Roses were, in a word, sporty, and their first two children - Gabe and Talia - were exactly the same.

Micah, on the other hand, was a little bit of a changeling.

Not in appearance, of course - he had the same black hair as his father and older brother, and his mother and sister's green eyes - but where the rest of the family was graceful and athletic, he was awkward and more than a little nerdy. While Gabe became their high school's star wide receiver, and went on to UConn like their parents, and Talia took up soccer and got a scholarship to UMass, Micah was the family mathlete, who pulled straight As and a position as valedictorian before heading off to Berkeley at the age of eighteen. He was also, he frequently told people, the only Rose incapable of staying on his feet during a pick-up game of flag football.

It was who he was, though, and his parents were certainly proud of him, though also a little confused by him. And they certainly didn't understand what the hell he was studying - first at Berkeley, then at MIT, finally at Cornell.

It wasn't until his early twenties that Micah seemed to grow into himself entirely, filling out from trips to the gym and finally fitting his height of 6'2. In turn it finally started to feel like he fit in with his family, once he started looking at their beloved sports with a more mathematical eye. Once Micah started going to the bars with his dad and Gabe, the Roses were almost guaranteed to win all the betting pools.

These days, both Gabe and Talia are married, and Naomi and Seth give significant looks to their youngest; they don't care that he's gay, not in the least, but they really wish he'd find a nice boy to settle down with.
